To feel a voice & PINONTTO

Laura van den Enden and Jasmin Kuusinen are presenting their projects together. They share an interest in the theme of craftmanship and sustainability. Their projects are contrasted in materials which create a dialogue between the two artworks and its viewer.

To Feel a voice

The project “To Feel a Voice” is an attempt to discover the voice as a remnant of a character and the personality it inhabits. Every voice has its own colour and texture. These characteristics find its translation in a textural installation. For years, I have kept a notebook. Where instead of leaving the page blanc after I wrote things down, I have the tendency to fill the page with blacks as fast as possible. Black ink, charcoal or thick paint frame the words I have written. This way of framing becomes the foundation of the project. Of which colours and textures shape the voice. The project is way to celebrate and monumentalize the human voice.

Weaving is a pattern, just like language. Words shape conversations, it connects but also breaks. Through textiles, I explore ideas around communication, translation, language boundaries and time. I use second-hand materials, resulting in textile pieces of different textures and colors. These blemishes show craftsmanship and honesty. Breaking traditional methods of working allows room for conversation.

PINONTTO

A collection of accessories is presented abstractly by using the inlay technique in a new way. This project uses old crafts in an innovative way. The stones are breaking through the surface of the wood.

This project imagines a new interpretation to classic craft and decorative techniques. The technique of stone inlay and stone carving are the techniques are highlighted with these pieces. Minimalist in its design, the rounded shapes play with light and shadow. The pieces of the collection are placed in a calm composition that reflects the meditative crafts used to make the pieces. The collection is presented as a three-dimensional still life inspired by the ancient craft of stone inlay in a panel made out of pine. The stone pieces are placed into the sheet of wood only show rounded shapes on the front of the piece, creating a still life depicting a stack of rocks. On the backside of the still life the mechanics of the pieces are shown.

The collection is made out of discarded marble and stone, creating sustainable design that promotes craftsmanship. This collection and presentation will let consumers experience a product in a new way. By creating a different experience around consumption, patterns can be broken and a space of awareness and appreciation for material and craft is created.

Within my project I comment on mass consumption and production by making each piece by hand and using waste and discarded materials. I use old crafting techniques in combination with minimalistic design in order to create my pieces. By creating a different experience around consumption, patterns can be broken and a space of awareness and appreciation for material and craft is created.
